1:31 p.m. CST

Whit and I were halfway back to the ranch house when we saw one of the Range Rovers headed our way.

I pulled him across the canal and then reached for my phone and started looking through my unread texts. They were all from Mona and all from yesterday.

"Any messages?" Whit asked as he pulled out his own phone.

"None from anyone here. You?"

"Nope." He shifted his weight. "Well, there are some from Vincent about Sunday's game against the Jets."

By then, the Range Rover had arrived. Dwayne was driving and Billy was in the passenger seat. Whit got in behind Dwayne and I got in behind Billy.

"What's up?" I asked.

"We have some updates," said Billy as he turned around in his seat. "We've got three helicopters heading here. They should all be here by 4 pm at the latest. One will take you two. The other will take Oksana and Gregory. The third will take Sandra, Susan, and Rhonda. You'll all go to Kerrville Airport. Sandra will fly back to Longview. We've got a car going to Austin for Susan. Another one going to your sister's hotel for Rhonda. And then one for Gregory and Oksana to go to the Westin downtown where they'll meet up with Viktor who made bail, by the way."

"What about us?" asked Whit.

"You'll go to your house in town." Billy glanced at me. "Unless you wanna go somewhere else. Big Bertha is in Austin and ready if you want."

"We'll stay here," I said. "We have the game on Sunday."

Billy nodded.

"Is that why y'all drove to get us?" asked Whit.

"No," said Dwayne, looking at Whit in the rear-view mirror. "We have another situation."

"What now?"

Dwayne smirked a little. "It's gonna piss you off, so get ready."

Whit nodded.

"The protestors were paid."

"Well, of course," said Whit. "Who was it this time?"

"No," said Dwayne. "It's none of the usual suspects. This one is different."

"Different how?"

"Mario is pretty sure that this group was paid for by Gregory."

"Fuck!" said Whit. I reached over and took his hand. He squeezed back and held on.

"And our guys on the road are saying it's more like a party out there than anything else."

"Also," said Billy, "Susan, Rhonda, and Sandra are packing up all the leftovers to take out to them. So, there's that, as well."

I nodded. Then I had an idea. "Can we absolutely verify these folks were paid for by Gregory?"

"Mario's got people working on that right now," said Dwayne.

"What are you thinking?" asked Whit.

"Oksana said she wasn't ready to leave. Remember?"

He nodded.

"And she'd been crying."

He nodded again.

"What do you think Gregory is doing?"

"He's obviously up to something."

I smiled. "Yes, cowboy. But I get the feeling that he's making some sort of grand gesture."

Whit stared at me with a frown as he leaned over a little. In a quiet voice, he asked, "What kind?"

I shook my head. "I don't know."

"Ask Nick," he whispered.

I nodded and closed my eyes. "Well?"

"I got nothin', kid. He's a closed book from what I can see.
